Although wrinkle relaxer and Dysport are each made by different companies, their functions are almost identical. Both work by temporarily weakening muscles so that they can’t contract and form wrinkles. Dysport is made by Galderma, a company which also produces Restylane filler and, like wrinkle relaxer, is a wrinkle relaxer.

Dysport treatments have also been shown to slim the appearance of a “square face” when injections are concentrated in the masseter muscle —the muscle around the jawline. When administered properly, Dysport can relax this muscle, which gives the face a narrower appearance.

How many units do I need?

Dysport and wrinkle relaxer units are not measured in the same way, so you shouldn’t expect to receive the same number of Dysport units as wrinkle relaxer units. All medications have measurements that describe the amount of the active ingredient in each treatment, and most medications are measured by weight (milligrams, grams, etc.). The ratio of Dysport to wrinkle relaxer units is generally 3:1, so if you needed 20 units of wrinkle relaxer in your forehead, you would need about 60 units of Dysport! Dysport is measured by Speywood units.

The benefits of Dysport

Dysport can do more for you than just treat your wrinkles! Anyone who shows signs of aging, grinds their teeth, or experiences excessive sweating is a good candidate for Dysport. Just like the biceps, the more you work out the cheek muscles (almost always involuntarily), the more “hypertrophied” it gets. Dysport counteracts this by weakening or partially paralyzing the cheek or masseter muscle so it does not contract. Over several days, the muscles stay relaxed and muscles elongate and appear to “slim” down. A slimmer jawline can improve self confidence and reduce the appearance of aging. Note that Dysport will only act on muscle so if your face shape is due to fat or bone, it won’t be corrected by Dysport.

The cost of Dysport will depend on the amount used on each individual client. Some clinics charge a fixed fee per area (e.g. glabella, forehead, crow’s feet). For the face, 50 units of wrinkle relaxer, or its equivalent of 150 Speywood units of Dysport, is considered the average for relaxing the muscles on the upper third of the face.
